I'm not being Forward but I have the strong Feeling your Name is actually Welsh (corruption of of sound-alike Davies) which is also spelt Davis...

My guess too ! Said with a Welsh accent and to someone not familiar with the name or accent 'Davies' sounds like 'Daves' and so it is quite likely that an immigration clerk or other official would record it as 'Daves'.

Davies is simply 'son of David'. It is one of the commonest names in Wales, probably the commonest after Jones ('son of John')
