I have a panoply from my father-in-law. Supposed to be the family coat of arms. Two swords with the word "Colada del Cid" & "Tizona del Cid". Can anyone help with the meaning? e-mail at (Please do not post email addresses in open forums. Registered members can view your email address in your profile, if you wish to provide it.) Hi ceil and welcome to answerpool.com. I spent a great deal of time searching the net to find the meanings of “Colada del Cid” and “Tizona del Cid”. While I did not find a direct translation, or meaning. I did however find few tidbits of information that you might find of interest.

Both of these are names of swords that were used by a Castilian knight born Rodrigo de Bivar, a Spanish hero during the 11th century. He was known most often as El Cid or El Cid Campeador.

Tizona –possible meanings

Terror of the world
The poker

The Tizona is said to have been once owned by King Bacur, but taken by Cid. When he died it was buried with him.

Colada—possible meaning
Sun attributes

Folklore tales tell that the colada sword had magical properties.

El Cid—possible meanings

“the lord” or “the boss”. El Cid is thought to be an Arab word
The Cid = Seid or Signior

He also had a horse that was said to be the founding stock of Andalusian breed of horses. It is said that he picked out a white horse from a heard when he was a boy. He named him Babieca meaning “stupid one” because his grandfather was displeased with his choice of horse. For white horses were thought to be poor in health and abilities.

Babieca died two years after Cid’s death. The horse lived to be 40.

The direct translation which I obtained from www.freetranslation.com is "It strained of the Cid"

I don't know if that means anything to you, but i hope it helps. Smile

Thanks for the info on the panoply. We always thought it had to do with the family name, but the name is from Scotland. I guess through the years the story became confused. It is interesting to think we have replicas of swords used by a Spanish hero. Thanks again

My dictionary gives "colada" as meaning "good sword" and "tizona" as meaning "sword."

You have two swords and two words meaning "sword."

A book I have called "The Spanish World," has this to say that may interest you.
quote:
Then, too, there were those who were to come to Spain from other countries. It is true that not all of these stayed......Others came to fight for a while, for there was something peculiarly attractive and spiritually rewarding in doing battle against the infidel in Spain. In 1330 Sir James Douglas and many of his Scottish knights, the bearers of a casket enclosing the heart of Robert the Bruce, perished in the battle of Teba de Ardales....

Maybe you can find some link in this information that will explain why a Scottish ancester has a coat of arms with a Spanish insignia.
