Does the Autobahn in Germany still not have any legal speed limit? +++++++++++++++ 07-30-02, 09:05 AM teeceeum NC, are you up late or early?
As I understand it some sections of the autobahn are speed regulated. I don't know what the criteria are, but I would assume it to be much the same as our lesser interstate speed limits around metropolitan areas. There's still plenty of room to open her up though.
10-17-02, 02:54 AM chanceygardner This is an old question, but I answer it anyway. Sections of Autobahn:
- around cities - where Autobahns meet/cross - where there has historically been heavy traffic - through tunnels, etc. - some other reason best known to the authorities
do have speed limits.
It varies, but they are usually something like 120 km/h (70 mph) on heavy usage stretches, 100 km/h (60 mph) on approach to Autobahn junctions (where Autobahns meet/cross) 80 km/h (50 mph) at the junctions where Autobahn meetings/crossings or through tunnels, etc. On the Autobahns where there is no reason to limit, then you can drive as fast as your car is capable of. There are many kms/miles where you can do this, but you still have to drive carefully!
Oh yes, the 'recommended' maximum limit on the Autobahn is 130 km/h (80 mph), even in areas where you can drive faster, but it is not a law. wink
11-01-02, 10:29 PM qualserve I had the pleasure of driving the Autobahns from 1962 until 1968 (with a year off for duty in South east Asia), and haven't understood our speed limits since!! You do learn that good tires and a well maintained car are verrrry important!! Drove my 2002ii Bimmer and my Alfa Romeo 1750 GTV at max for hours at a time!! Wow!! I understand that traffic is a large hinderance now, but back then ya just had to dodge the flatout (70 mph!!) VW's! I now drive the highways of the Northeast and have a few favorite spots where 130 can be attained! Sad fact is that most US drivers have no clue about the capabilities of themselves or their cars. The young "Mod Squaders" with their 200+ HP and NO2 rice burners are doing a good job of keeping the Paramedics employed!! Peace. big grin
