Lets let them drive 'pedal to the metal' for 5 miles, and really see who has the fastest car.

What would be the deciding factor, driver and crew or manufacturer?
07-20-02, 01:38 PM nerdqueendeluxe All of the above including track conditions? That would be really interesting the first season while they tried to get the cars tweaked just right. I have seen the Ford test track in Naples, Florida and think I heard that it is the longest one?
07-20-02, 06:46 PM Strider0 I like the idea! but would you do it as a time trial? would the course be on a straight "track" out in the middle of Wyoming on I-80?
07-20-02, 09:32 PM Bibc14 i dont think that manufacturer would make a difference, because they basically use all the same parts inside the car, same rear ends, mostly the same engines, so it would be a matter of who could tune the car the best (which still makes a huge difference in NASCAR now)

What you are asking to see is a drag race. I don't think you would have much of a fan base for a 5 mile drag race. Plus, it would be much too expensive for anyone to buy a 5 mile long strip of land with adequate room for grandstands and parking. NASCAR is becoming boring enough, without making it a flat on the mat shoot-out. After yesterday's race in New Hampshire, I am convinced NASCAR and its officials have no clue anymore on how to put on a good show for the fans. I am also convinced they don't care.
The deciding factor in such a race would have to be the crew. Especially the engine builder. As previously stated, the componenents are the same for the most part in every car, and anyone can drive a car srtaight. It would be a pure contest of who can generate the most Horsepower, just like NHRA. Even more so, because over 5 miles, the driver could make up for poor reaction time.
It is an interesting proposition, I just don't think it would work.
