Why is this race called the 'Brickyard' ?

Actually, it is the speedway that is known as "The Brickyard" because its first paved surface was brick. The only brick currently left is the yard of bricks at the start/finish line. (It was originally a board track in 1909)

NASCAR couldn't call it the "Indy 400" because Tony George wouldn't let them and they also wanted a unique identity for their own race. Hence, The Brickyard 400.
