Why is this race called the 'Brickyard' ? +++++++++++++ 08-05-02, 01:01 PM teeceeum Actually, it is the speedway that is known as "The Brickyard" because its first paved surface was brick. The only brick currently left is the yard of bricks at the start/finish line. (It was originally a board track in 1909)
NASCAR couldn't call it the "Indy 400" because Tony George wouldn't let them and they also wanted a unique identity for their own race. Hence, The Brickyard 400.
