I'm looking for a couple of websites that describe in detail, the history (timeline) of the racing helmet, particularily in Formula One. The evolution of the F1 helmet in other words. Can anyone help me out with links, or give any information? I can use this site as one of at least two resources.

According to this website purpose-made helmets only came into use at the start of the 60s.

This site is a very interesting history of Formula 1 and the pictures show the different helmets used through the years. Also this site.

Sorry none of those sites has an exact timeline, but hopefully they will be of help.

Something I found that may be of interest to you:
Scottish born Andrew Mellor, of the FIA Institute, is a renowned helmet-design scientist and originator of the FIA Super Helmet specification for Formula 1 drivers.
