Does North America use the same default channel number setting as Europe for a UHF video recorder without a Scart socket which is channel 36 in Europe?

If I understand correctly (I'm not certain that I do, but since no one else has responded...), the answer is no.

First, as far as I can tell, scart sockets are a UK thing that is not used in the US. I say this because I have never seen one and because doing a Google search on the term returns nothing but UK sites on the first page and no US sites for the first several pages, at least.

Second, I'm interpretting "UHF video recorder" as VCR. If I'm correct in that, our default channel is 3.

Channel 3 is VHF here. Although our major networks tend to be on VHF (2-14), I gather that the UK no longer uses VHF for TV broadcast. Poking around on the web, I also gather that the channel numbers we've given to frequencies in the US do not match those in the UK.

Thanks for that Methos
Surprised me that VHF is still used. Thought that had gone with 405 line TV in the 60's in the UK Confused

Channel 1 was the BBC and Channel 9 was ITV (Only 14 channels in total)to cover the entire country on VHF
When BBC2 came out(1964) it was only available on UHF 625 lines (And to herald Color TV in 1968 they ran Color test programmes from 1964 to I think 1970?) It would be on say channel 65
(depending on the local transmitter) range goes from 21 to 68 (So plenty of expansion scope) Smile Channel 5's introduction caused reception issues with some video's because in some area it was tune to channel 37 (36 is the video channel) and B) the channel was on the weak side with not everybody able to see it Frown
Only way was to go Digital(switch over in some areas is starting this year and total coverage is about 2010?) That is another matter Roll Eyes(Getting ahead of myself! Wink)
Another Issue was Aerials due to the new UHF frequencies they could only recieve signals tuned to them. So they were (and still are) in some areas classed in "Bands" A-E,W and K

This web page gives all the historical details
plus the frequency band numbers as above. Plus more info Cool
