What are they all for? I know that yellow is for supporting our troops and pink is breast cancer awareness and red is AIDS awareness, but is there a list or does anyone know what the different colors are for -especially if there is more than one thing for one color (for instance, the rainbow ribbon is for gay people, but also for the Make-A-Wish Foundation...)?

Just remember that there is no "Official List" and that anyone or any group can adopt any color desired. The original one came from the Tony Orlando & Dawn #1 hit song (1973), Tie a Yellow Ribbon, which was about a prisoner returning home to a former love after doing time. I think it got co-opted by the Hostage Crisis in Iran, and then on to POWs.

There has been a big controversy here about the yellow ribbons, and the pink ones being tied on almost every pole here. The city suggested that the pink ribbons be removed, but the breast cancer supporters said they had as much right, as the troop supporters. I think it's really sad that everything turns out to be a controversy. Where is the commonsense?
