I was nearly 2 when the Preston Bypass opened to traffic in the UK Late 1958. It was 8.5 Miles long
http://tinyurl.com/2898wl It was the First special purpose built road where you could travel at "top speed" to your destination ( Later reduced to 70mph)
And of course everybody wanted a go and True to form everybody came out on the same day (public holiday)and Clogged it up Solid First of many Jams

Note: there was a reputed 50 long mile tailback reported recently
And when It was moving the only fast traffic was sports cars and the odd motorcycle The rest were out of breath at 60mph and Breakdowns were very common The designs were only good for winding roads (And some vehicle from the WW2 generation still running around) not for Full bore driving
And within a few years They had added More to this section reaching Birmimngham in the south and almost Carlisle in the north
And It was called the M6 which had taken a lot of the traffic load off the almost Parallel A6 Trunk road
And recently they have opened a M6 Toll road to circumnavigate a Blackspot in Birmingham ...But little has changed Traffic levels are unchanged and the toll road is seeing not much traffic and same happens here too(jams) at certain times of the day

... No win situation?
Question for you
What was the year(and where did) America opened its first mile of Interstate and what speed limit was imposed on it
and was that Jammed too?
