When do you get your social Security Numbers in the US?
And Does your Birth certificate number the same number?
PS Can you quote them without referring to paperwork?
I have my Birth certificate number whch looks like a car registration tag Though its changed formats many times since I was born in the 1950's
As regard the Social Security numbers (Called National Insurance Numbers in the UK ) these are allocated when you leave school (in my case at 15) they are in the Format 2 letters,6 numbers. and a code letter(A to D) such as AB 123456 A Format has been unchanged since their introduction in 1947

Scroll half way down this page for lots of info Somebodies done a good deal of research into this subject Smile

A Social Security number isn't the same as the number on your birth certificate in the US. Birth certificates are filed by the county one is born in, Social Security is a federal agency.

A person can receive a Social Security number soon after being born as long as the paperwork is filled out and sent in.

I have no idea what the number is on my birth certificate, but I learned my Social Security number in college. It's about the only mathematical thing I remember from those years. Wink

Birth certificate Numbers as far as I know are
issued by the Local countys regional health Trusts who have several sub districts issuing via the Local town Registrar (Births Marriages Deaths) or a registrar based at the principal Hospital .. Some how the system works
everyone got a number in the days before the Internet
And all the records go to the Social Security
and Somerset House London (physical register books) until the 1970s when they were moved
The best official link they have for searching for UK Births & Deaths records online is www.familyrecords.gov.uk
I think the code prefixes were ID for the office and the entry number on the log book
Hence the mad Numbers Mine is MHRR xxx I think the MH stood for Mersey Health, but I doubt it Confused My 2 younger sisters born in the same hospital Have entirely different codes Confused
Like registration tags you can make words out
Pity my eldest brother he has PHTT to drag around with! Frown
PS Pre National Insurance days (1947) they had a better method they used the NHS number (on the birth certificate to be used as the reference number at work) this was 4 letters and I think? 6 numbers Like ABCD 123456 Older UK Answerpoolers can clarify this?

I forgot to mention if a parent is going to claim a child as a dependant on federal income taxes, the child must have a Social Security number. Since that is the main reason for having children Wink, you can bet nearly all kids have a SS number before the first birthday is celebrated.

Children' SS numbers haven't always been required to be claimed as dependents, but this was started after people were claiming their dogs, cats, or any other pets that they had as dependents, or just lying about how many kids they had.

Now, people with a lot of kids are loaning other people their kids SS numbers to claim as dependents. Roll Eyes

I don't know who's more crooked sometimes....the government or the people.
