You may be able to change your original birth certificate. The two main reasons are legally changing your name (marriage doesn't count) or by having a sex change. These rules do differ state to state. You would need to contact your state vital records department for more information. Birth certificates can be ammended for paternity or mistakes. The original information stays and just is crossed out. The new information is added above the changed text.
Thanks Clare. I'm totally shocked. I had no idea that a birth certificate could be changed, and when I heard that it could be done because of a sex change, I thought it was a lie. It seems to me that a birth certificate should be just whatever you were at birth, or it's not really a genuine birth certificate. Look like the logical thing to do would be to issue a new document for your new birth, and they both should be kept together. The original seems just as important to me.

I had my birth certificate amended, for the simple reason that it was stamped deceased and was attached to my death certificate. They had a feeling it was wrong when I showed up in person.
The minor error occurred because my late brother and I had the same birthday, albeit one year apart.
I often wonder what freedoms I might enjoy if the government continued to think that I was dead.
