Two separate quotations from: Is Puerto Rico A Colony?

"We remain, for all purposes, the original military colony that was the cause of it all."

"Puerto Rico remains essentially a colony to this day, even though it has attained "commonwealth" status. This allows the Puerto Ricans to have US citizenship and an elected legislature. Puerto Ricans, however, cannot vote for the president or Congress unless they live on the mainland, although they do participate in presidential primaries. They also receive limited federal benefits but do not pay federal taxes. They have no control over their external relations."

I believe the United Nations considers Puerto Rico a colony of the United States. The U.S. doesn't like the term, perhaps a result of its own revolution, and refers to Puerto Rico as a "territory" or "commonwealth."

Background on The Foraker Act establishing the governance of Puerto Rico.

Well, I certainly prefer the term "commonwealth" to "colony." Yikes.

Do Puerto Ricans generally support their status as a commonwealth/colony? I understand that they periodically vote about whether they want to remain as is, become a state, or become independent. Is my understanding correct? How much anger is reported there against the US due to their status?

Hawaii was a "Territory" of the US before becomming a state..
Alaska was a "Territory" of the US before becomming a state...
Puerto Rico is a "Territory" of the US that has not become a state yet....
Soon , it will be....
The term"Colony" is a describtion primaryly by the British... What the UN calls it, I have no idea, nor should we care....
