I don't know if this is the right area to post this, so if any moderator feels this needs to be moved to a new board, then by all means do so. Thanks.

When my parents brought me home from the hospital in the mid 1960s, there were no infant car seats like there are today. However, my parents tell me that they did place me in a primitive (i.e. the 1960s) Wink form of an infant car seat that simply hooked over the back of the front bench seat via two hooks made out of either plastic or metal. The actual seat where the infant (me) sat, was, to the best of my parent's recollection, made out of a similar sort of webbing that comprised the old aluminum and webbing folding lawn furniture of that same era. The infant's legs slid through two holes made for this purpose. Apparently there was also an infant's "car bed" that similarly hooked over the front bench seat so that the child could lie down on it and sleep. And yes, I made it through the 1960s unscathed! Wink

When I learned about these devices (which my parents tell me were not widely used at the time), I immediately set out to try and find some photos of these 1960s infant car seats and car beds. Thus far I have only been able to find one site that briefly talks about the history of car seats. But as of yet, I have not been able to find any photographs of these old style car seats. And no, my parents didn't take any pictures of me in these car seats. Cameras and picture taking back then were about as primitive as the car seats!

Does anyone know where I might be able to find a picture of these style car seats/beds? Does anyone remmeber having something like this? Did anyone else's parents drive you home in something similar during that same era?

I was born in 1977 and I had a "normal" car seat, not as sturdy as my kids have, but the same sort of thing.

My sister was born in 1972, and she had a seat similar to what you described. It was like a lawn chair but the seat belt went over the child's body. I've seen pictures, but I don't have any myself.

I can't find anything online, I'll look some more and post again if I do.

My daughter was born in 1970. We had the usual infant carrier and a car seat much like you see today. I don't remember anything like you describe John.

My first memory is of the age of two. I distinctly remember standing on the floor of the car behind my dad as we went to look at the house my parents were about to buy. Obviously, I survived too. Or maybe I didn't. This could be Hell I suppose.

My dad had armrests in his car that, amazingly, doubled as kid seats. What fun!

Have you tried finding such an item at e-bay?

Gosh, you make me feel old! My daughter was born in 1965. As far as I remember we had nothing special for her when she was very small, just a carry-cot (for Americans, a light baby carriage that can fit on its own wheeled frame or be carried by hand). Later she had a plastic seat with a minimal seat belt which fastened to straps fitted to the car, or fitted to its own frame to become a high chair. No pictures though. Sorry!

I remember the car seats that you are talking about & would also love to see some pictures of them! My brother was born in 1969 & I remember him sitting in one of them. The one he had had a padded back & seat with a padded frame or bar (not really sure what to call it Wink) that actually could flip up to make it easier to get the child out. The bar was held down by a strap that was attached to the bottom of the seat that came up & over the bar & snapped to hold the bar down. It had two metal hooks that went over the back of the front seat. I can remember it was a tan vinyl material that the seat was covered (or upholstered) in.

Helen: I would also love to see your pictures!
