Thanks for that Methos
Surprised me that VHF is still used. Thought that had gone with 405 line TV in the 60's in the UK

Channel 1 was the BBC and Channel 9 was ITV (Only 14 channels in total)to cover the entire country on VHF
When BBC2 came out(1964) it was only available on UHF 625 lines (And to herald Color TV in 1968 they ran Color test programmes from 1964 to I think 1970?) It would be on say channel 65
(depending on the local transmitter) range goes from 21 to 68 (So plenty of expansion scope)

Channel 5's introduction caused reception issues with some video's because in some area it was tune to channel 37 (36 is the video channel) and B) the channel was on the weak side with not everybody able to see it

Only way was to go Digital(switch over in some areas is starting this year and total coverage is about 2010?) That is another matter

(Getting ahead of myself!

)
Another Issue was Aerials due to the new UHF frequencies they could only recieve signals tuned to them. So they were (and still are) in some areas classed in "Bands" A-E,W and K
