Deeptread's drawing above is what we in Britain called Mr Chad, who - like Kilroy - appeared during World War II. Perhaps because we were more short of essentials than the USA was, he was always asking about something that was lacking, using the phrase "Wot - no ...?" For example, "Wot - no butter?"
Our guy wasn't just 'there', he was constantly whingeing about something! (Typical Brit...let me say it before some American cousin does!)

I think Kilroy was an inspector and left his Kilroy was here to let them know he did his job!
