10-11-03, 12:30 PM methos Here's the basic list:
ABC - Disney CBS - Viacom CNN - AOLTime-Warner FOX - News Corp. NBC - GE
10-11-03, 01:23 PM methos Let's start with GE election donations during 1999-2000:
Total electoral expenditures: $1,423,505 To Republicans: $898,606 To Democrats: $524,900
Broken Down further:

George Bush Campaign: $5,000 George Bush inauguration: $100,000 Democratic Presidential Candidates: $0
10-11-03, 01:31 PM methos Here's the same sort of data for the other 4, except that this is for the 1997-1998 election cycle. I'll see if I can find data for the 1999-2000 cycle.
Walt Disney Company & affiliates Total Campaign Contributions: $475,602 59 percent to Republicans
Time Warner & affiliates Total Campaign Contributions: $410,317 53 percent to Republicans

10-11-03, 03:02 PM methos To give a better comparison, here's the 1997-1998 election cycle data for GE: Total campaign contributions: $663,000 57 percent to Republicans
10-12-03, 12:32 AM Kelleygirl Nice work, Meth---
Gee, sure looks like a lot of Republican contributions for all that "liberal media". Confused
10-12-03, 02:24 AM FredPuli Well, they could be trying to keep the enemy sweet by 'bribery' or 'buying off', Kelleygirl Big Grin
The real test of neutrality seems to be whether the news service is attacked by both sides for favouring the other. ( In this case the BBC must be OK; the Government has accused it of a war against it over 'false claims' and the Opposition says it's full of Mr Blair's friends and has a left bias!) Smile
10-12-03, 12:13 PM wlmwallace methos, I learned something here and I am totally surprised, thank-you.
10-12-03, 06:10 PM wlmwallace After doing a little research I consistantly found the following: FOX NEWS Parent Company: News Corp Election Cycle: 2000 Total contributions: 776,980 Dems:31% Rep: 69%
MSNBC Parent Company: GE and Microsoft Election Cycle: 2000 Total: 5,857,835 Dems: 44% Rep: 56%
CBS Parent Company: Viacom and King World Election Cycle: 2000 Total: 1,427,750 Dems: 80% Rep: 20%
CNN Parent Company: Time Warner and Turner Broadcasting Election Cycle: 2000 Total: 9,460,804 Dems: 67% Rep: 33%
ABC Parent Company: Walt Disney Election Cycle: 2000 Total: 1,812,035 Dems: 65% Rep: 35%
Big difference methos, why?
10-12-03, 08:07 PM EBknowsBUBBA To me it reflects the company management making the contributions. Not the newscasters. From what I understand it is not that uncommon to see such an opinion gap between the two entities.
10-13-03, 09:02 AM wlmwallace EBknowsBUBBA, I think you're probably right. It seems both party's can spin this in their favor, as well.

Your numbers are for the 2000 cycle. Mine were for the 1998 election cycle. I'm surprised by the amount of difference for Viacom, Time Warner, and Walt Disney between those two elections, though.
EBknowsBUBBA - That is what it was supposed to reflect. That was, after all, the question.
10-13-03, 10:32 AM methos After checking, I'm not finding similar numbers to you for the 2000 cycle. The links don't seem to be working at the moment, but my source links to the documents filed with the FEC (I also tried search directly through the FEC and ended up at the same sites with the same 'not found' message). Perhaps the links will work soon.
News America Holdings (The american arm of the Australian-based News Corp.) 38% to Democrats, 62% to Republicans
Time Warner: 56% to Democrats, 44% to Republicans AOL: 44% to Democrats, 56% to Republicans (based on their numbers, I calculate 52% to Democrats, 48% to Republicans for AOL-Time Warner as a whole).
