Can anyone tell us before time zones where introduced how was time calculated in North America

Was It the same as the UK before Greenwich Mean time when Railway time was the rule wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/info/railway.htm
I think it was something to do with sidereal time too (beyond my knowledge) so there was about 5 minutes in rough mini time zones covering the Width of England and Wales Confused

FootNote Has anybody any Idea what happened Historically Before "Railway time"? that dates from about the mid 1850s Confused

More or less. You may be interested in reading Einstein's Clocks and Poincaré's Maps: Empires of Time, by Peter Gallison, which includes a fair bit on the history of standardization of time.
