If you read about the workers in the UK protesting a bit the annual wage rises for 2007 of just under 2% and a further 1% later on (absorbed by overheads Frown ) instead of 3%

NOTE...Europe is running about the same level

And I'm talking "Basic Flat Wages" Before Bonuses are added on OK?

I was wondering what in comparison are the unions expecting this year in the States? And what historically have they got in the past?

Vancouver civic workers are looking for something more than 17.5% over five years, although the current strike is not just about money. www.ctv.ca

Recently, both inflation and wage increases have been low, although Canada seems to be following the US pattern of the very rich getting richer, while median wages don't change much. Rich Canadians get richer; the rest stay where they are, study finds

There are lots of cases where bosses have given themselves bonuses/rises of several Hundred Thouand (without anybody questioning it from within the company Mad) and Yes, if the firm goes POP they walk into another company with the golden handshake (or golden...unprintable)...Lots of experience, respected businessman, to start afresh in the next firm to start wobbling (Just a big game to them)and by retirement they are Multi millionaires... Only rarely do they get cut down to size...But how do you stop their game?
It will happen eventually somehow Roll Eyes

Sorry about the small deviation it is a nasty practice worth reporting Frown

Several hundred thousand bonus, Bedstor? How modest! Some are far more than in the hundreds of thousands.

The practice of bad management rewarding itself can only be controlled in public companies by the institutional investors. They control all major companies. If they say 'no' then no it is. Only snag is that directors of institutions themselves vote for their own big bonuses as directors in their institutions, so are not entirely averse to the practice Big Grin

I work for a German based automotive company here in the states and we are non-union. Our annual raise comes in July, and we usually get 3% distributed throughout our department by merit. This means that those who deserve more can get up to 6%, and those that don't can get as little as nothing.

This year, however, we were told that in July we would receive 1.5%, and another 1.5% in January, similar to what you describe in the UK. I received 3%, in July, while others received nothing.

Not a fricking penny! Mad I've had one raise in nearly four years yet I keep hearing how wonderful and reliable I am. I'd hate to see what'd happen if I weren't. Mad

Everyone at the company I work for - from the receptionist to the CEO - has a very low base salary, which has remained constant at least for the 33 months I have been there. There is a significant performance component, however, which seems to have everyone pushing in the same direction.

Answers and approaches.

Pay me what I need, to do minimal work for you, since my expectations exceed yours

Pay me fairly and equally for what I do, within the same job/industry range

Pay me more than the next person in the same job that does exactly the same as I do

Pay me a living wage and bonus me for performance delivery

Pay me more than what you can afford so that I can make sure that your business will fail.

Screw the lot of you, I can do this whole thing better myself in my own business ... I'll show you lot

Now that I have a successful business of my own and need to employ non family members ... I am screwed

Get more education, learn a skill or become a corporate executive. I can imagine sitting on corporate or advisory board and make the decisions to pay myself as much as possible, all while screwing the worker that gives me my money

Strange ain't it.

The UK has a shorter work week than the average North Amercian companies.

Better workplace benefits

Better social benefits for the elderly

An excuse to go on holidays at every turn.

Cost of living raises seems to be a norm these days, outside of bonuses and incentive plans.

Then again as Jelp pointed out a zero

I'm at Boeing so you know everything with unions will always be good. I'm in a good tax bracket now. Good medical, dental, cost of living and all that stuff. Everything is all good my friend....

I have a decent job and just got promoted. I received the typical COLA and a small increase.

Good for you Ron! You struggled plenty. I am so happy life is good for you. It's time. Smile
