Yesterday was a co-worker's birthday and when she told a fellow co-worker she was handed money to pin on her blouse. When we took her out to lunch the wait staff at the restaurant would look at her and say "Oh, today is your birthday" very matter of factly.

She is an african american, the worker who handed her money and the wait staff at the restaurant are as well. The ones who were clueless about this tradition are not.

Today I just saw another guy walking down the hall with money pinned to his shirt.

Who is familiar with this tradition and does anyone know the background of it?

I've seen this tradition for many years in the area where I live. Not sure where it originated but I remember seeing a program that talked about a similar southern wedding tradition where men would pin money to the bride's veil for a dance with her.

Here's a blurb on the traditions-

A young girl, who was temporary help at my job, just got fired for this (amongst other things) about 2 weeks ago. She was asking people to pin the money to her body. It was considered solicitation. She had dollars all over her body (I mean ALL over). I thought it was very tacky.

Giving a bride cash has been around for years, but this birthday thing must be fairly new and tasteless idea.... To walk around with money pinned to your cloths advertising its your birthday to get more money from strangers is tacky as hell....

I thought it was extremely tacky myself and said that I hadn't seen that much money on someone who wasn't a stripper Roll Eyes

Needless to say, tactfullness is not my forte. The same people that wear money on their birthdays also sell raffle tickets to sponser their personal vacations. I thought that was illegal but apparently if you have a prize to raffle off the procedes can go to whatever you want them to go to. Talk about tacky with a capital T

And Raku, according to your link it apparently is a cultural tradition...The description of it in the article is exactly what I have seen.

How was the stripper carrying it on herself ? She could only get it when she'd stripped...... Confused

I've never seen female strippers with money on their persons; but it is common pracrice for male strippers when the usually female audience members encourage the stripper to remove more and more articles of clothing by sticking bills (banknotes) in the waistband of their g-strings. I don't know where Georgia sees these performances ?? Wink

And then he removes the g-string and causes a flutter, right? Confused

Strippers in pubs here walk around the pub afterwards carying a pint beer glass for tips. It can be a little disconcerting to anyone who has just walked in, to have a naked girl at their elbow holding an empty glass, the more so if they've got their wife or family with them Smile. Some city pubs still have strippers performing at lunchtimes, which can come as a surprise to anyone who has just gone in for a drink after shopping .

Fred, I was referring to male strippers who collect money in their g-string band. Male strippers don't do the "full monty" here Smile

Newnickname....you made me spurt coffee on my computer screen!

Females are allowed to walk around topless in Windsor Canada and prostitution is legal. Male strippers do the full monty in Canada. It is only a 40 minute drive for me. Oh! Canada! Big Grin

If we had an award for funniest post of the year, both the last two would be in contention. (But we don't.)

Gee, Clarebare, you don't have to drive to Canada to go topless in public. It's legal here in central Ohio! Truly, June is busting out all over here in the parks.

Isn't it in the fine tradition of AP that a thread that starts with a question about people who are fully clothed, ends up as a discussion about naked men and women ( without a thread in fact, if you will) ? Smile

Who is June, and is she worth the drive?

I did not digress from the thread! My comment about a stripper wearing money was still directed toward the initial post....can't help what some people look like! I believe (ahem) someone else took the stripper comment and ran with it! Big Grin

I get blamed for everything in this house!

Canada does have an all male strip club. The only problem is most of the good men are married and the ones who aren't- already have boyfriends. Roll Eyes
