I am not sure where to post this.. so here goes...

There are two types of batteries... the one-time use things and the re-chargeable sort. Is the higher cost of the re-chargeables really worth it?

I used to buy/use the rechargable batteries until the charger fell apart and dropped/broken
Did not get as much length of use between charges.
I buy all my torch batteries now from the "All at a $1" store(Or whatever title it is) get 4 to 6 batteries for 1 dollar as opposed to 2 for 50 cents in a convenience store and they do last longer When they are exhausted in a flash light I put them in a TV remote control and get 3 to 6 months extra value Wink

Sher, to me, I don't think the higher cost of rechargeable batteries are worth it. Maybe so in money, but not in convenience. I'd much rather pitch the one-timers and buy new.

Good tip, Bedstor.

And just think of the fun people will have in the future making all sorts of useful things out of the many billions of old batteries piled up in landfills and city dumps ! Chairs, tables, maybe even some lamps !

Okay Dorian, I'm confused. Are you anti-one timers? Confused

Not necessarily. I just want people to think about their choices and how it could affect the future. Making reasonable choices now would make a huge difference. Just think if a real national effort would have been made in the 70s, only 25 or so years ago, when the first energy crisis hit. We have over 105 million households in the US right now. How many batteries do you think the average family throws away each year? How big would that pile be? (And there will be a new pile next year.)

I have had rechargeables explode on me before... that's no fun. And a real mess.

My vote is for one time use.

That idea about using old flashlight batteries in a remote sounds great but confusing. Either you Brits have very different flashlights (torches) or very different remotes. Big size difference over here. Confused

Both my brother and sister have pushbikes the lights are powered by AA batteries We have several remote controls for TV, Audio.
ALL bar 1 have AA batteries in them (the other takes AAA's)
Never have used a C or D sized battery powered light in years. Batteries are too expensive also poor life Frown
I do have a mains "charge up" emergency light which gives about an hours light (have to plug it in an adaptor cradle to recharge fo 2-3 hours)
Most of my Battery powered equipment is powered by a mains adapter when in the house Cost? Have plenty of change from $10 Payed for itself many times over. Note I remove the batteries to stop them destroying the internals They Swell & Burst if left too long Eek Frown

I have used only two rechargeable AA batteries in my tv/radio walkman at work for over the past three years. I have bought Energizer brand and have not had any problem with leakage out of the cell. The charger is very durable, and you can get the whole setup plus two free AA batteries for around $20. Well worth it! I do not suggest purchasing an off brand like I did for my brother on ebay, they leak and they aren't as safe. I definitely have saved money on these, they are kind of expensive but they last forever. When you're done with them you can bring them back to BestBuy to give to them, they a box for them sitting at the service desk. I also have purchased four more for my digital camera, and the prices at Walmart run about $6 for two, but they are worth it in the long run. Just make sure you fully charge them. And as Bedstor said, you should promptly remove them when the light goes off, when they are done charging. That's how my brothers off brand ones leaked from overcharging. DG, I know exactly what you mean by duct tape, lol. Hate it when the backing comes off of the remotes. Duct taped all remotes, hehe.

I use only top brand one time use batteries. Namely Duracell. I've paid too much money for my electronic gadgets (cameras, etc) to risk putting junk in them. Besides, the coppertops just seem to last longer.

I've used rechargeable batteries in the past and have generally been pleased with them.

Rechargeable Battereis FAQs

Although this definitely is not reccomended, I recharge disposables at least once or twice before I throw them out. The trick to recharging them is not to over charge. After all its just a dry cell battery, the only difference is the metal used in rechargeables.
I use a wire and the 12 volt DC battery in my car/truck. connect pos to pos ant tap quickly and for split seconds at a time untill battery gets warm......not hot but once it starts to get warm............let cool and repeat then you have a fully charged battery yet again. Make certain you inspect the casing for cracks or leakeage before attempting this or you could cause a small explosion. I have done this for about 25 years with no problems at all. And it does work !!
