I just called the 800 number, got Sears Customer Care, was told that not only is Bill Thorn an employee but that what is stated in the e-mail is correct. Good for Sears. I hope everyone who reads this tells friends about what Sears is doing for the troops.

Thank you Mozart! I checked this article out on snopes and it's true! (I don't know about Target though.)
I also know that when I worked for the Sears Catalog, I was impressed by Sears' concern for their employees and by their positive regard for the family. I was truly impressed.

Sears is certainly to be commended fot their efforts, but I'm a bit bothered by the comments about Target. Although they don't go as far as Sears, Target also goes beyond the legal requirements. Sears pays the differential for 24 months, Target for 6 (according to this page, which I found via Tex's link). Target is not French (not that this should be a slur), it is an American company based in Minneapolis and has been for the past 100+ years. They also include Veteran's organizations among their charities.
Walmart, which is not mentioned, is similarly generous in that they will pay the difference for 5 years.

Is there a difference between Wal-Mart's pay scales and military pay? Here in California, many full time WalMart employees also qualify for public assistance because of their low incomes.

Incidentally, quite a lot of large firms have similar policies. My own Employer, Lockheed-Martin does, for instance. Some smaller firms just can't affort do keep people on the payroll if they aren't producing anything.

Thank you notinmyname and others. I received the e-mail referencing Sears support of our troops earlier today, as one will note few years after all of your postings. I was pleased to learn that many of our US Corporations support our troops by holding their jobs, maintaining their benefits etc.
Like others, I had read on a # postings that Target was French owned, did not support a # of well deserving organizations.
I commend Methos and notinmyname for their diligence in uncovering the truth about Target.
Well, I'm glad to hear this about Sears but it won't change whether I shop there or not. I shop at Sears as little as possible because, at least locally, they have terrible customer service and do not deserve my patronage.
