My son is getting bombarded with with pre-approved credit card applications in the mail. I've scanned a few sites about getting his name removed from these mailing lists, but they all require his ss# number included on their forms and letters. How can he stop this junk mail without releasing his ss#?

Mark it "Return to sender."

If the post office doesn't want to take it back, toss it in the recycling bin. Basically, you can't stop them -- they've got congress on their side. In any case, do not give them a social security number.

You'll probably have a tough time doing that. This is the sample letter provided by the FTC. You'll notice that it indicates 2 of the 3 major credit reporting bureaus want your SS # to verify your identity. If you call 1-888-567-8688 and speak with them, it's possible you can work something out.

I don't know how to get him off the lists but I know how to get even with the cc companies. I make it a point of shredding the personal info and then take the return envelope and stuff it with as much other junk mail as I can and send it back. They have to pay the postage, (and hopefully it is overweight)I get rid of my junk mail, and I think if enough people do this the cc companies might get the hint.

There is an easy way to opt out. The number methos provided can opt you out for 2 years or forever. 1-888-5-OPTOUT (1-888-567-8688) The inside of the credit offer also has a phone number for you to opt out. It is usually listed in small print on the back of the last page of the offer.

To remove your name from many national direct mail lists, write:

DMA Mail Preference Service
P.O. Box 9008
Farmingdale, NY 11735-9008

To remove your name from many national telephone marketers, write:

The post office will only return first class mail to the sender. If you put return to sender on the mail piece and it is standard mail, it only gets thrown away by the post office and the company never knows you refused it. Standard/Bulk rate mail is never forwarded unless it is an address service requested piece of mail (which is rare for standard mail).

See here for various ways to opt out

Its great to see you Jersey!! Smile
