No wonder I'm tired. Look:
The population of UK is 60 million of whom:
25 million are retired, leaving
35 million to do the work, of whom
24 million are in education, leaving
11 million to do the work , of whom
1 million are unemployed,
5 million are employed by the government and
1 million are in the army/military, leaving
4 million to do the work, of whom
3 million are employed by towns, cities and counties, leaving just
1 million to do the work. Now, of those there are 620,000 in hospitals and 379,998 in prison leaving just

TWO people to do the work.

Well I'm sat here working on this post. So, if you are a Brit, then you may be the other one (so get back to work!)

No wonder I'm feeling tired.

There's a lot more Americans, so I expect more of you do the work but I bet your figures are almost as bad. Are they?

[I am indebted to the London Evening Standard for explaining this; I had been wondering why it was ]

I am under the impression that about a quarter of adult Americans are in jail, while the other 75% are on the internet all day arguing between John Kerry and George Bush. Razz

Actually, I did a search and I couldn't find a similar breakdown for America. Too bad, it would be interesting.

I have seen things like that before, for the US. I am fairly sure that the US has about 2.5 million in prison. Surely someone has this in their email from sometime.

According to the Bureau of Justice, in 2002 there were something over 2 million either in jail or prison. But there were 6.7 million under some sort of correctional supervision.

And I have seen stats which show that about 30% of the workforce have government jobs. But I can't find them right now.

Per the CIA factbook, 66.9% of our population is between 15-64, and 12.4% is over 65. That gives us 232,370,864 adult Americans. So 0.8% are in prison. I hesitate to figure the "correctional supervision" on just adults because that sounds like parole and JuV, and I'd imagine some of the children are in that too.

Yes, I'm tired. For several years I've been blaming it on iron-poor blood, lack of vitamins, air pollution, water pollution, saccharin, obesity, dieting, yellow wax build-up, and a dozen other maladies that make you wonder if life is really worth living.

But now I find out, tain't that. I'm tired because I'm overworked.

The population of this country is 200 million. Eighty-four million are retired. That leaves 116 million to do the work.

There are 75 million in school, which leaves 41 million to do the work. Of this total, there are 22 million employed by the government.

That leaves 19 million to do the work. Four million are in the Armed Forces, which leaves 15 million to do the work.

Take from that total the 14,800,000 people who work for State and City Government and that leaves 200,000 to do the work. There are 188,000 in hospitals, so that leaves 12,000 to do the work.

Now there are 11,998 people in prisons. That leaves just two people to do the work. You and me. And you're sitting there reading this. No wonder I'm tired.
