The handshake is symbolic of the warrior days of old, when two men came upon each other, each would extend their open hand to show they were holding no weapons. To embrace hands was a gesture of respect/peace/friendship.
I believe it was the Greeks who made the "right hand only" rule. For, the left hand was used to wipe their *****. And so, to offer someone your "**** hand" was considered an insult,. And, still is by many, to this day (including myself).
Also, the reason the British drive on the left side has nothing to do with this. More about that later.

As someone who's background is in Sales, I have learned over the years that a firm handshake helps to instill confidence in the person being shaken....
I've found this to be true - whenever I've met people over the years with a limp handshake, they've generally proven to be wishy-washy and poor decision makers.
Again, being from a Sales background, I strive to always give a hearty and strong handshake, gripping the other's hand boldly but without causing harm, obviously. I've found that his has been beneficial in my ability to instill confidence in my customers.
Oh, and I always extend my right hand unless I notice that the other person is encumbered with their right, then I'll extend my left.
