The new MAC-OSX like Linux is too complicated. But as Linux gaining ground is hard. I mean more software and hardware is available for Windows. U goto any CompUSA and there is only one cubbie hole corner for MAC and the rest is all PC. And if U can't do anything neat on it it doesn't mater how fast or shinny it is. I doubt that'll change anytime soon. Any body beg to differ?

Windows will dominate for the next lifetime in some form or the other right?

Torn on this question since it suggests a lengthy period of time.
Windows may dominate, but if it does it will probably be as different from today as DOS is from Windows XP. Otherwise they will probably be blindsided by the unexpected appearance of a revolutionary system. The number of potential creators of the new system grows every year and I think that is what causes Gates his nightmares.

...to purchasing the new Mac OS X. Yes, you can't download everything you want (I think that will change shortly), but you also can't get a virus, and Macs don't crash - no "Blue Screen of Death". Mac is an extremely intuitive machine, which is probably why I was so impressed - I'm an intuitive person & the Mac just made sense to me. I'm willing to give up some of my "pretties" and "toys" for a machine that doesn't keep needing something else to make this, that, or the other work just a little better (or make it work like it should have in the first place).

However, there is no "wrong" answer here - it's simply a matter of personal taste/choice. Whatever works best for you, is the best for you.

I grew up on MAC but everytime I wantred to inquire about something they said Right click on My Computer and got Properties! And I would I have MAC and hence no My Computer! And they would say sorry! So I was tired of being outdated!

Anyway like U said though it is just personal preference! But MAC does have viruses so don't be fooled!

Linux is gaining popularity, it is stable and doesn't need nearly the number of patches that Windoze has. Linux is an OS that we should all watch with great interest.

Mac is too unflexible and closed minded about sharing anything. I like Mac, so I find this unfortunate and believe the future of the company is not good. Linux may be the future of operating systems if only enough people jump to it.

Macs, in my experience, are no more stable than PCs. My undergraduate college chemistry department was all Macs (except for one SGI), and they crashed regularly. Two of them lost track of their hard drives. Most of them would freeze up occasionally... and would not reboot with anything short of pulling the power plug out of the wall. They would occasionally refuse to eject disks by software command, so, with no button to press, a paperclip needed to be inserted.

I also had a friend whose Mac died on her (beyond repair).

I'm not saying that Windows is any better, but Macs are not inherently crash-proof.

Thanks, methos5000. Yours was the first un-biased opinion I've been able to find about Macs. Well, other than our Corportate IT guy, who said he'd never speak to me again if I got one. In fact, he said he'd personally fly from Miami to Denver and whack me up side of the head if I did it. LOL

I don't care about purty, I just want it to work...most of the time. My WinXP Pro is doing okay after a few early problems. It's not perfect, but I'm happy with it.

Since this thread seems to be revived...

It's worth noting that the current Mac OSX is really BSD with a slick GUI. (BSD is a Unix variant) So, it is very similar to Linux and many workhorse linux/unix apps can be compiled on Mac OSX - for example MySQL and qmail. It will only be a matter of time before Mac apps begin being ported to linux.

It's possible both could gain from their similarities.

Windows is so far ahead of the mac in almost every area. Not to mention, it's just flat out easier to use and can do more!

Something extraordinary would have to happen with Lynx for it to become the number one interface, reality says that it will never really reach the main stream, even though Microsoft haters tend to think so.

Other platforms have tried to become number one and failed, and rightfully so, unless they can run my Windows software collection I don't have a use for them.

We would be a lot better off if we only had one software format to deal with. Those other guys are just outdated dreamers.

Minor correction: Mac OS X is UNIX based. There is a difference.

See: http://www.apple.com/macosx/jaguar/unix.html

The first line of text says "The most widely-distributed UNIX-based operating system, Mac OS X offers a unique combination of technical elements to the discerning geek..."

ivnj, Mac is definitely not easier than the PC. I've used Windows and DOS all my computing life and when I had to use the Mac in a work environment I was amazed at how outdated it seemed. Mac is easier because it does less!

Most people use Windows, companies that use the Mac or any other program besides Windows as it's platform realize that they have to invest in extra training for their employees or only hire people who are specially trained on those systems. They do it because there's a benefit in a specific area, not because it does more or is easier to use. The Mac is still common among Graphics enthusiasts, even though the PC has surpassed Mac in graphics capabilities
