How many people out there are still using win95 for their operating system, instead of upgrading to anything more recent? Is there anyone who just did not want to upgrade, and just keeps going with win95? Just curious! LOL Thanks for answering!

I forget about ME but at least as of this summer Microsoft said they will not continiue supporting 98SE and below! All support will be thrown out! So I don't see how anybody can still use Windows 95! Even basic E-Mail and WEB Browsers will be too advanced for 95 someday! But U never know!

Yes , I suppose that would make it hard to continue using win95, unless there's some sort of support program out there to enhance it, tho if there is, I've never heard of it. This new info should put a cramp in any answers that I would have received, LOL. Thanks for the info, ivnj, I use a pc with win95 for a backup in case this one has problems. I dont usually have any problems with it, but its not used very often either, just to update the anti-virus on it, (Norton Utilities version 4.o, with the anti-virus), I may install a more recent version soon, if I can find a compatible one.

ivnj is right. Microsoft is going to dump on all users of it's OS's other than XP starting this summer. That means if you get a virus, or have problems - expect no help.

If you've got a decent computer that's a backup running 95 - you might want to consider loading it with Linux. The SuSe, and Redhat disks are a breeze to install, and kernel upgrades always have beeen and always will be free.

just a thought...

cresen7,
Are there minimum requirements for Linux? If so, what are they please? My backup pc is a Pentium 133 mhz with 32 mb RAM, and a 5 gig hd. Would this system work with Linux?

You could backup to any common medium, then simply transfer them back to the new "linux disk" - virtually all file formats can be opened by an open source application. Certainly any "Office" documents, gifs, mpegs, and mp3's

There are several linux distributions that will run on your system. But to take advantage of the full graphic capabilities you probably need more ram. If you've got a CD drive, you can try one of the coolest linux distro's I've seen.

It's called knoppix. It's a bootable linux distro and several applications - all on a bootable CD. It actually runs the OS from the CD drive - and allows you to use ALL of your 5 gig HD for data. It also lets you take a look at one linux distribution (there are many) without changing anything on your hard drive. The price - in true linux fashion - free to download, mail order disk - 5 bucks. You can check out knoppix at: http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html

One warning, if you do get linux installed you may find yourself using your "back-up" more than your "main" pc. Something about no crashes, no need to scandisk, defrag, or worry about most viruses and worms that gets habit forming.

crescen7,
I received the Knoppix 3.1 Cd today that I bought off of ebay, and when trying to boot from it, it goes thru the auto configuring sequence, then lists hardware, then goes to a black screen and just sits there. Any idea what might be wrong? Thanks for any help you can provide!

I have one pc that is running Win95 OSR2, it runs great and it shuts down 20X faster than my newer XP machine. Makes you think if the people in Redmond are really "innovating"...
