I wouldn't even begin to know what ones to put in the poll.

So let's have a write in election! Smile Different responses from differnet people. What do you think is the single greatest scientific discovery or invention of all time?

Gotta be light
I mean , ELECTRICITY.

It is due to electricity that enables so many
gadgets to run!

FhF,

gotta give it to you!

WHEEL_ PIONEER OF INVENTIONS!
It is the turbine (thanx to the wheel) which helps produce electricity.

Does such higher math as analytic geometry and calculus, for example, by which all may observe and describe many inventions, count?

Newton's Laws of Motion, The microscope, Telescope, X-Rays, semi-conductors and transistors, the transformer. I think that wheels and electricity etc. are naturally occuring and evolving phenomena rather than inventions or discoveries.

How would we know about any of the great inventions without it? The printing press was the greatest comunication revolution, and the greatest tool against tyranny, in our history.

More to the point, without the printing press how would husbands (on their third try) figure out how to put stuff together?

I would rate the discovery of penicillin(sp) VERY high on any such list.

There are so many wonderful things out there that are taken for granted every day.

This is a great question, and none of the things previously mentioned can be discounted.

And who created all those wonderful people?

MOTHER NATURE! All comes back to the main source ! smileMy personal favorite one ,the guy(unknown) who made the first fire!

Ahem... how can it be proven it was a "guy" who created fire? eek

First fires have been produced(by man or woman) by "friction". It took big grin patience, and hard physical work big grin and ......the bets are open!!!

Considering

boys are usually into hunting and pre occupied with providing for the family & conventionally it is the women-folk doing the cooking and is devoted to keeping the family safe

it has
GOT TO BE

a Woman!!!

Logical enough wink ,

In all likelihood, the first fires were caused by lightning, and saved from day to day. And aren't sparks possibly the first man-made fires ? smile

Sorry I did not phrased it clearly. You're right, fire came first with lightning or even volcano's! But I was thinking about the first human being to start a fire from scratch.! smile

The greatest invention:
I suppose the wheel - so much has grown from that.

The greatest discovery:
So far, fire - same reason.

But I don't think the GREATEST discovery has happened yet!

Hmnmn...... you do get us thinking, there!

Have something in mind?

Definite toss up on this - but would say either the printing press or the ball

I think the discovery that most changed our world and the way we think of ourselves was evolution. Did you know that Darwin wasn't first?

Oh,
I really didn't know that. THNX for the info dNYer.

HOwever,
I don't really agree with you here
'cause I don't beleive in the theory of evolution.
Instead, I think that even ADAM was a man_not a monkey, nor a monk!

I think that as far as actual discoveries, rather than concepts that evolved over time, penicillin has to rate up there at the top. At least in my opinion. smile

And more than a few have been lost! When sewers were first put into London, the effluent went straight into the river. This made things a lot healthier for the rich folks on the hills, but led to massive loss of life from cholera epidemics among the poor, living in their hovels by the river. mad

Either the wheel or

Actually, I think it's

before them?

My favorite invention of all time??? The mattress. Great for sleeping on. Sure beats sleeping on a hard floor.

Okay, all the historical inventions are important without a doubt, but what's the one modern invention that took science and the pursuit of knowledge in general to a whole new level? The computer. This isn't just technological innovation, it's technological evolution, a drastic paradigm shift in the way we process, store, and share technical information.

Hate to be a bore, but it was probably how to use fire. This allowed people to migrate all over the world, adapting to new climates, and to smelt metals and make pottery.

They greatest discovery of all time has got to be the open mind. Without it, most of the things mentioned here would never have come to be.

At last,Duct Tape ! Big Grin Elexina, that's the answer we Brits were expecting ! And quite right too ( we don't have it yet, though a few missionaries from US airforce bases have allegedly got it to a few places in this region); bit like Aztecs and the wheel, really ( or was that Incas ?), somehow surviving wihout it to the amazement of everyone else in the civilized world! Smile

Scientific-(besides fire and the wheel) is the discovery and use of electricity, and agriculture/food production. Clothing and soap, come in as runners up.

But I think, over all, the most important 'invention' is use of language/ communication -both written and oral.

Everybody has a different list, and it's fun to see the different opinions.

I have to second Dogspit on this one. Smile
