I have ridiculously sensitive skin. Even the wrong toothpaste will make the skin around my mouth and chin break out. I suspect the sodium laureth/lauryl sulfate, which makes it bubble up, might have something to do with it, but some toothpastes cause more problems for me than others. Has anyone else had this problem? Anyone have any mild toothpaste suggestions?

Tom's of Maine - all natural toothpaste.....
might be local? I don't think so though - - if so - go to any health food store, they'll have an all-natural toothpaste and this should help you out.

Cris - I have tried it - I don't mind it - I have to admit though - no matter what I try, my mouth never feels as fresh as with good old Crest - I think it's all in what you were brought up with.

For the Tom's - you have to get used to the flavor of natural toothpastes - it doesn't have sweetener that regular toothpaste has - so you might find it a little less "appealing" - than the rest - but for your situation - it's worth a shot.

They are a bit stronger in the "mintiness" cause they don't use artificial mint flavoring - - it's the real mccoy.....

Get just a small tube and give it a shot - you just might like it and it may be less irritating

hi cris,
i also have this problem that i get sores in the corners of my mouth when i use toothpaste with baking soda in it. i am very happy with colgate, but it may also still be too harsh for you.
i even get a sore on a certain spot on my gums when i change toothpastes! if possible try something herbal, tom´s of maine is a good choice.

Hey guys. I learned not to use baking soda toothpastes a long time ago. I thought that would do it, but I've still had problems.

I bought Tom's last night and started using it this a.m. It does have sodium lauryl sulfate in it, but I'm giving it a shot anyway. I thought it worked well cleaning wise. It will take a couple weeks before I'll know whether it irritates my skin. I'm also worried about the fact that there is no tartar control component. I see a dentist every six months, though, so maybe it won't matter.

Thanks everybody!

Hi Chris
I know this sounds odd, but I grew up with a girl who's father was a dentist and they didn't use toothpaste at all. They just used a brush and water, and I have to tell you, they had very nice, cavity free teeth. I suspect they did use a mouth wash.

Cris - the only thing the tartar control has is an abrasive that's really not so good for your gums anyway - - (this info from my dentist) - provided that you don't tend to have a large amount of (yuk) buildup, it shouldn't be an issue - - for many years tartar control didn't exist and people had good teeth anyway - so it's just a marketing thing.....(probably)...

I've not used a tartar control toothpaste - and when I go for my cleanings every 6 months - I'm outta there in 15-20 minutes so I don't think it's a problem...

When I was pregnant the process of spitting when I brushed my teeth made me all most vomit. It was awful. My dentist said to just brush with water. But you have to brush. You don't get the fresh feeling but if keep me from spitting. I would ask your dentist next time what they would suggest.

Nursey 63- Me too- I gag whenever I use toothpaste...Something about it...

LVLF, I only brush with water every day and afterwards every other day I use mouthwash.

I dont have any cavities.

I also scrape my tongue! It gets rid of 95% of that icky bad tasting stuff in your mouth...I used to think it was disgusting, but now I cant stand the thought of leaving that mucus just sit on my tongue all day..just full of bad enamel-eating bacterium..ick!

*runs off to go scrape her tongue*

I always gag brushing my teeth. They say if you breathe through your nose while brushing it won't happen.
