Well if you have dark skin to start with the only way you will make it pale is with makeup. If you are pale anyways and just want to be paler, yet not wear makeup, then try white talcum powder or baby powder. Use a big powder puff and pat the powder on smoothly.

There are creams which are designed to lighten skin - but I don't know how well they would work on an overall complexion. They are called "fade creams" (At one time they were called "vanishing creams.") and are designed to lighten freckles and spots on skin.
I suppose it's worth a try - but read the directions first to be sure.

I had a little brown mole on my face from tanning. I tried the fade cream. After a few days of using it, the spot peeled and peeled. It was raw and it hurt. I think those products have a higher content of alpha hydroxy acid in them. Ouch

I think it depends upon what colour your skin is now. If you are black or Hispanic, or otherwise have darker skin, chances are slim anything other than makeup or powder will work. However, if you are white and very light - like me - try to avoid sun on your face, and make sure you always wear a stong sunblock. I am very very pale, not by intention, and its from living up here in Alaska where we rarely have sun (even during summer when we have 22 hours, its been raining.)

Please stay away from paling creams, as stated above these have proven to be damaging to the skin, in some cases they can cause severe scarring.
I agree with Texan, see a dermatologist, they'd be able to recommend the safest way to lighten your skin.
PS, I'm pale as sin and I HATE looking as though I glow in the dark! I've even had people ask me seriously if I'm wearing white tights and they were my bare legs! If this is purely a cosmetic thing, then I urge you to try to come to terms with your skin tone.
