How do I tell if a rash is a virus or bacterial infection? I ask because I went to the dermatologist once and he said there was a distinct way to tell the difference.... I can't remember what it was.

If the rash is skin with scaly patches then usually it is not due to any type of infection. Examples would be various forms of dermatitis. However, it is possible to have scaly patches of skin produced by fungus or a bacterial infection. It's just doesn't appear that frequently. Ringworm is one example.

If there are red itchy bumps or patches all over the place it then it is either viral or allergic. If it is viral, the rash is symmetrical and appears everywhere on the body. Unless it is a viral infection of the skin itself such as shingles. Then it is localized to one area of the body.

Well now I haven't put out my wood shingle yet so might be best to go to a dermatologist for a professional opinion. :-)

Went to the dermatologist today. He said it was localized dermatitis and prescribed some cortizone cream.

I should be all better in a couple days. Smile

Oh that's good! Is it an area of your skin that has come in contact with a belt buckle or purse strap? Because nickle that can be found in buckles on belts and purse straps is a common culprit of contact dermatitus. Sometimes certain fibers in clothing will cause it as well as certain detergents you might wash your clothes in. Hope you can find the culprit so you don't have any more episodes.
