How long should someone wash their hands to get them really clean? Does the anti-bacterial soap clean my hands better than traditional soap?

Well to get hands REALLY clean scalding hot water, hospital strength soap, and a brush to scrub under the nails should be used. But even scrubbed nails still carry a large amount of bacteria.

I don't believe antibacterial soap is really any better than regular soap. I think studies would agree. But for the average person to wash hands under water as hot as can be tolerated and fully lathering with a deoderant soap such as Dial and rinsing completely...I'd say one - three minutes would suffice.

I've heard you're supposed to sing Happy Birthday twice, and THEN you're hands will be completely clean, or for the most part at least!

Did you work in the fast food industry by chance? At the hand-washing station at the restaurant I now work for, there's actually a sign that says - "wash for 20 seconds - sing happy birthday twice" smile smile

Well, as it happens the running water and the friction of the soap running is what really gets rid of the bacteria. The bacteria are scrubbed loose and rinsed away. It is recommended to wash at least 20 seconds (Jeopardy theme length), but for a good wash 60 seconds is preferred. Warm water is fine, you see your hands can't tolerate hot enough heat that would kill bacteria (think autoclave). It is the friction and running water that matters. You need to shut the water off with a clean paper towel or you will just recontaminate your hands anyway. Here is a website with more information.
