Samantha...

It depends on the location. For elbows, knees, ankles I have always used Eucerin lotion. Use it 2 times a day to affected area.

That is the best for the worst dryness.

But....Bag balm and sween cream work really well too.

Eucerin products are the best. They are expensive though... They don't have perfumes or other things that cause allergic reactions. I go to a dermatologist and he recommends it.

I use the alpha hydroxy body lotion most of the time, but during the winter I use the creme on my hands to avoid cracking.

It is best to put on lotion right after a shower. They have a face lotion too.

I also suggest Eucerin .. in fact I have recommended it to many of my patients.

There are two forms it comes in:

A lotion (thinner and dispensed from bottle)

and

A cream (a basin sort of container and very thick.. only takes a tiny amount)

It IS expensive, but it goes A LONG WAY.

I bought it at Walmart myself.

And never use a lotion that has mineral oil listed as one of the first 5 ingredients. It's a falacy that mineral oil will soften skin. What it does is forms a layer on the skin but in doing so clogs the pores.

Eucerin is probably one of the better products to use. You might also like Corn Huskers for your hands. It's packaged in a clear plastic bottle and it's a clear gel rather than a lotion.

Ya know, Georgia, I always wondered why certain lotions seemed to make my skin worse. I narrowed it down to me just having weird skin, but what you said makes so much sense. I use Tim's Crack Cream, very expensive, $6.00 for a small tube, but it seems to work well for me. I also seem to get a kind of reaction from an ingredient in most lotions that gives me small water like blisters between my fingers, and with Tim's CC I don't. I don't wear rings on my fingers, so I know it's not a reaction to that.
Anyway, thanks for the tip.

Just out of curiosity, I checked my creams and lotions to see what was in them, I have Keri lotion, which contains no mineral oil, but the third ingredient listed on the Eucerin cream is mineral oil, and I ran out of the Tim's lotion, so threw the empty tube away, so I couldn't check that. Maybe I'll check out the Eucerin lotion to see if that is oil free.

From what I've been told, there isn't anything wrong with mineral oil. I use it in the form of baby oil... my dermatologist said that it was alright, but suggested the Eucerin products in addition to that.

I believe the mineral oil in addition to just sitting on the surface also keeps your skins moisture in... traps it.

Anyway, thought I'd put my two cents in on the mineral oil issue.

OK, I did some research on the mineral oil scenario. Apparently it does keep moisture in, but in doing keep Oxygen out. Since the skin needs oxygen to thrive, being denied it puts the skin in an unhealthy state. By sealing the skin you cannot go through the healthy process of slothing off the dead skin cells, the skin does not regenerate, and thus begins to dry and crack.

Check out the info here.

But likewise you can find articles touting the benefits of mineral oil. So I guess it's whatever your individual preference is.

So, it's just a ploy to keep us buying a product that, in fact, causes the very thing we buy the product to prevent, so we keep buying it. Very tricky! Thanks for setting the story straight, Georgia. Hey, where do you find all this information, anyway? Smile

Well LVLF...the above was just one interpretation of the usage of mineral oil. Some will disagree with it. As for information I post...well the knowledge usually comes from books or what qualified people have told me. But when I want to provide a link to it I just do a "google" search to see what I can find on the internet! Big Grin

Try MD Forte replenishing hydrating cream. You can go to a dermatologist and buy it without a visit. It is expensive but great. Also either Rx Lac Hydrin or a milder one over the counter. It is for very dry skin. Teresa

Challie, it seems Eucerin is available over here. I hadn't heard of it, but their UK website gives details.
