I spend a lot of time outside and never wear sun screen. Yesterday I spent about four hours in the water and my face is really burnt.
My question is, can that make you feel bad? Like you have the flu?
Chills, feverish things like that?

Well, I got sun-poisoning when I was on my senior trip. I got terrible burns and they blistered up. I did run fevers, got chills and I was severely dehydrated. I don't know about flu symptoms.. but I was seriously sick. Unfortunately everyone else was drunk and so I suffered alone... and I could have needed hospital attention... I actually probably did...

HaHa Lydia!!

It could be a reason I'm so thirsty all the time though. I'm really gonna have to watch it.

When I used to be out enough to get a bad sunburn, I would usually end up feeling really, really lousy for at least 24 hours...

Although I tend to avoid overexposure since I'm very, very fair, since I've moved to a more humid climate (WI), and have been working in the yard for one hour increments on sunny days, I've actually started tanning a little.

I've never really used sunblocks, but I definitely would if I was planning on being out in the sun for an extended period, say at an amusement park or on a boat....

I had a horrible burn on my legs a few years back where I actually ended up in the emergency room!

My mom was a sun worshipper when she was young, and now she's had very leathery & wrinkled skin by the time she was 40. THAT'S the main reason I try to keep my sun exposure to a minimum! cool

Yes, the sun CAN make u feel sick if you get a bad sunburn. I've experienced that a few times, not fun. It makes me just feel lousy! I feel completely drained and it will, most of the time, make me have a fever. I stayed out in the sun ALL day at the lake on the fourth of July and ended up having a HORRIBLE sunburn. I felt bad that night AND for the next couple of days. Also, drinking beer all day at the lake probably just made it THAT much worse. Trust me, I won't be doing that again. Just make sure you're not out in the sun for an extended period of time w/out sunscreen on. I like getting a tan just as much as the next person, but I know how to go about it w/out COMPLETELY frying myself now.

Yes, your symptons are most likely sun-burned related -- be careful! I had heat exhaustion once when I was a teenager and was throwing up, wound up in bed with the chills for a entire day and night. Ever since then, I'm very suspectible to being over-heated. It's like the one incident permanently wore down my resistance to heat.

I have fair skin and skin cancer runs in my family. I like a healthy tan look but I get mine out of a bottle. There are some really good self-tanners now that do not look fake (or make you look orange.) Neutrogena has a nice one that gives me a nice tan. You can pick it up at a drug store. I wear #30 SPF on top of it so I don't burn underneath the self-tanning lotion.

I'm almost 40 and people always guess me to be much younger because I have taken precautions to prevent sun damage. I have friends who have really leathering skin and it's icky. Take care of your skin now, you'll be glad later.
