my elbow is swollen and there was no injury
my doctor said it looks like an infected insect bite and he gave me a prescription for an antibiotic. i feel i may have been mis-diagnosed though...
my parents say it looks like a "nacido" which is "born" in spanish. I have no idea what that is.
but i have pics, hopefully somebody can pinpoint what this damn thing is

normal elbow:

Is it painful?
Is it hot to touch?
Is there any drainage?

I agree that it could be an infected insect bite

It appears to be very localized so a joint inflammation doesn't seem to be a option.

Were you pricked by anything like a rose bush thorn? Any break in the skin?

It could be nothing more than an inflamed hair follicle known as a furuncle. It results in pus and dead tissue accumulation. It can abscess if not treated.

Apply hot compresses to the area. This will help the area to come to a point a drain. Keep taking the antibiotics. If it doesn't clear up in a week go back to the doctor. He might have to make a very slight incision to drain the area.

The antibiotics weren't availible yesterday so i didn't have them until right now today Smile
i just googled the name "omnicef" and came up with this:
* More common side effects may include:
Diarrhea, nausea, vaginal infection

* Less common side effects may include:
Abdominal pain, headache, vaginal inflammation

* Rare side effects may include:
Abnormal stools, constipation, dizziness, drowsiness, gas, indigestion, insomnia, itching, loss of appetite, rash, vaginal discharge, vomiting, weakness

i don't have a vagaina LOL but the rest of the stuff sounds pretty bad Eek

my father put some penicillin pomade on it and the swelling seems to have gone down. Maybe its an illusion but the redness is now a much smaller circle
im very hisitant to take that pill

A "nacido" is an enlarged pore...like a huge pimple....and it fills up with cebo. It may not reach the point of actually being an infection. My mother-in-law had one on her back the size of an orange. She went to the doctor and he drained it and sent her home with an antibiotic and instructions to hot-pack it twice a day. She couldn't reach the area herself so guess who had to be in charge of that! After a month of hot-packing and daily draining (it tended to fill up again), we were finally able to eliminate the nacido completely. The doctor had expected to have to take out the enlarged pore but it wasn't necessary. People with thick skins may be more likely to have this problem than thin-skinned people.

The antibiotic is probably so you can by-pass the hot-packing and draining and to avoid complications like abscessing (see Georgia's post). Mi suegra took an antibiotic but I don't know what it was. This took place about 8 years ago and she passed away 5 years ago so the information isn't available anymore.

If you read the "side-effects" for any medicine you will never take anything because it is so scarey. These are worst-case scenerios and medicines have to go through vigorous testing for years to get on the market. If you trust your doctor it should be safe to take it....safer than being self-medicated.

the thing that scares me is that its only for 10 days and its 2 a day, they also say the effects of an overdose are unknown..
lol i have alot of stuff to do i don't want to have diahrea and insomnia! Mad

Take the antibiotic pills. The side affects you are reading are nothing more than having an upset stomach. And you can't go by "rare side effects" because anything listed can be totally unrelated to the medications. When clinical studies a performed for a medication, participants must list any abnormal instance they experience just so that the pharmacy company can cover their tails. If someone participating in a trial for aspirin and then had a stroke, stroke would be listed. And because only 1 out of maybe 100 participants had that stroke, that would make it a "rare" side effect.

I won't lie to you - an antibiotic more than likely will give you diarrhea. Keep in mind, it's destroying bacteria. There is always bacteria in the body and there are "good" bacteria in the intestinal track which aides in digestion. Kill that and you upset your normal body chemistry. End result is upset stomach, diarrhea, etc. It is advised to take antibiotics with food as to decrease the chance of upsetting your stomach.

Antibiotics also change the ph level in the vagina, which brings on yeast infection and discharge. Again, no big deal and nothing you have to worry about.

Everything will return to normal once you finish taking the antiobiotics. Only thing you do need to be concerned with is a possible allergic reaction to it. Most people know if they are allergic to penicillin and most doctors will ask you about it before prescribing it. When you take your antibiotic if you have a sudden change in breathing where you can't take in air, if your throat feels like it is closing, if you have a severe rash...those are signs of an allergic reaction and you need to call your doctor immediately.

But try the pills. The pomade will not get the antibiotic into your bloodstream which is where it needs to be in order to fight this infection.

And yes, hot compresses, hot towels, hot packing...all the same thing. It's applying heat to an area.

I would not advise using both the home remedy as well as the doctor prescribed antibiotic...unless your doctor is aware of what you were doing and told you it was alright to continue. Taking the pill will do the job. The pomade gave the illusion of working only because it was destroying bacteria on the surface of the skin and what little bacteria it could reach via tiny scratches in the skin around the infected area. But as with all medications, you should not exceed a recomended dose and your doctor has prescribed that dose for you so please follow his prescription.

Great advice, all of you.

Capicu, I am glad you started taking the antibiotic pills. As Gerogia said, the medication needs to be in your blood to reach all the various cells that might have the infection.

Glad to hear your infection on your elbow is clearing up. Smile

Welcome to Answerpool, by the way. Smile
