Here is some information about "moles' (which sounds like what you are describing):

Moles can appear anywhere on the skin. They are usually brown in color but can be skin colored and various sizes and shapes. The brown color is caused by melanocytes, special cells that produce the pigment melanin.

There are some warning signs of malignant moles, and if this skin condition you are describing has had a recent change you might want to get it checked out.

Recognizing the early warning signs of malignant melanoma is important. Remember the ABCDs of melanoma when examining your moles.

The basic ABCD rules to determine whether a mole is a melanoma are as follows:

MELANOMA CHARACTERISTICS

1. ASYMMETRY: one side does not match the other.

2. BORDER IRREGULARITY: jagged or blurred borders.

3. COLOR: color not uniform, there are different shades of black, brown, or tan. Can have white, red, or blue splotches.

4. DIAMETER: greater than 6mm

From the Mayo clinic:
When to seek medical advice

If a new mole appears past age 20, see your doctor. These signs and symptoms may indicate a medical concern:

Painful
Itching or burning
Oozing or bleeding
Inflamed
Scaly or crusty
Suddenly different in size, shape, color or elevation

If you're concerned about any mole, see your doctor or ask for a referral to a dermatologist.

It could be Pityriasis Rosea. Do you have any other spots?
You need to go to your doctor. If it is Pityriasis Rosea, there's really nothing you can do but wait for it to go away. If it's not, you need to find out what it is.

London,
How old are you. Might call this a skin blotch.
If it gets raised some, might call it a seborrheic keratosis. (old age spot)
The melanoma warning is valid. I did a study 35 years ago on 125 Melanomas and arrived at exactly as what is reported.
Still don't know what makes one cured with resection and one killing the patient in 6 months. There are such things as amelanotic melanoma. If you were confused before we throw that at you. One picture worth 1000 words. Let the dermatologist see it an put yuor brain to rest or you will get insomnia.

London, you said it was under your bra strap - something else to look into would be tinea versicolor. It is caused by a fungus in the skin and found in most adults. It can cause visible symptoms when there is moisture or high humidity. It commonly affects the chest, back, upper arms, and legs and appears as reddish brown patches.

About three months ago, I was towels drying my hair when I got out of the shower and noticed a brown spot under my left arm pit. Its about 1 1/2 inches wide and 1inch tall. It doesnt itch, hurt, burn, or even feel different. The thing just keeps getting darker. It looks alot like a dark birth mark, which I know it isnt. Any ideas about this would be appreciated.

Sarah, if the spot is still there after three months, it's time to ask a doctor. While it's probably nothing, it is still a change in your skin, and that needs to be looked at. Make an appointment, and please let us know what the doctor says.

When you see noticable changes in skin markings and moles, etc. It is HIGHLY recommended to have it examined by a Medical Professional.

You should get it checked by a doctor.

I agree with Dorian and Sherasi: any changes to your skin should be checked by your doctor or dermatologist. ESPECIALLY if it continues to change and ESPECIALLY if it is getting darker. Dark is bad. Go to the doctor.

I have good news to report about the brown spot under my armpit. About 3 or 4 years ago, I started using Aerosol deodorant instead of stick deodorant. I quit using it about a month ago, and already the spot is fading. You can barely see it now. Thanks to all who responded.
