I agree with Shona. We each have lessons we have to learn - I believe the Hindus have the idea of climbing the steps to Nirvana? I believe its like that. Thus we are reincarnated to learn our lessons. When we have learned them all, we reside on the Other Side (Christians would call it Heaven).
I do not believe in Hell. The Judeo-Christian idea of Hell is merely a mechanism for control. You will do what the church told you to do or you will burn for eternity in Hell. So who made the church's rules? Who made the church God? The rules of the church are not God's rules, and God is the only being able to direct us. This, again, implies a purpose to life other than to either watch us sin or watch us be good...reincarnation.
However, this is not something I can forsee anyone really having proof of. How can you test for it? How can you test for a soul? You can't, but we believe we have souls.
I think the best thing to do is to communicate with God to determine what your task or lesson for this particular life is, and try to accomplish it. Whether you go to Heaven or reincarnate, its always a good idea to listen to God.

It's a good idea at any time. But what do you mean by "reincarnation?" Do you mean the spirit comes back? I know each person born has a soul, for it's the soul departing from us that causes us to be dead, but whether it's an "old" one or "new" - the "soul" I don't think is an individual thing that can or needs to be recycled, but a bit of the Spirit of God. In that vein, one of the prelates approached the Pope in Rome one day and said, "Good news and bad news, Father." "Good news first," said the Pope. "Jesus called! He's back!" "Why, that's wonderful," said the Pope. "And the bad news?" "He called from Salt Lake City." Catty (who is convinced God has a sense of humor - witness the platypus - and appreciates that joke)
