Is it true that Ouija boards are evil? I would like to buy one, but have been told by many people that they attract evil and harmful spirits.

Yes and no.
Ouija Boards (or Spirit Boards) are a gateway to the spirit world. They open up a doorway through the veil between this world and the next to allow communication to occur.
On their face, they are not evil. They are simply a communication device like a telephone or a radio or that thing ET hooked up to "phone home."

However, without the proper precautions or in the hands of someone inexperienced, they can be a way for malevolent spirits to slip through the veil and wreak havoc.
An ouija board is not a toy and should not be used lightly. It is a serious communication tool. If you are truly interested in contacting the dead, then you should use one but use it wisely. And carefully. You should create a protective circle around yourself before using it, specifying that said circle will protect you from any energies or entities that might wish you harm.
Do not go into it without caution, for you never know what you might be letting out.

As Elexina said, the board itself is not good or evil. However, personally, I would not use one. I liken the Ouija board to having a party in your house and placing invitations in every phonebox in town. You may get some very nice people coming to the party, but you might get some very bad people, and in fact, bad people- or spirits in this case- are more likely to be attracted to such a party/board; and you won't know until it is too late.

Oh man. You guys. It's a toy. If the Ouija Board has any magical powers, so does the Magic Eight-Ball!

Enough 'inexperienced' users have consulted the Ouija Board in the last 100 years or so that if 'malevolent spirits' could really slip through the 'veil' we would be knee deep in demons wreaking havoc.

If you think they are evil and you buy them then your friends will scare the crap out of you because you are gullible.

The funniest thing about Ouija Boards is the myth about how if you use it alone you could channel something horrible... and bad luck and all that nasty stuff.

The reality is that if one person uses the thing there is nobody to push the little thingie... so the gullible people that believe in it wouldn't be able to get it to work.

Typical Ouija Board result : "OH MY GOD, were you pushing it? That was sooooo weird!"... "No I wasn't pushing it" <----Big fat lie.

Totally funny though. It is a toy; it is made by Milton Bradley I believe... and they have done quite well with it.

Uh Oh. I asked the Magic Eight Ball if Ouija Boards could be dangerous, and it said "All signs point to yes"!

I don’t necessarily believe there is anything to the Ouija board, but who am I? Those that do believe are probably better qualified to even make this judgment as they are usually the type of person that studies alternative religions and/or paranormal, and, at the very least, they are certainly entitled to their opinions without being ridiculed.

Imagine that you lived a few centuries ago and someone told you they had seen a magic box that voices come out of. Would you have dismissed them, calling them gullible?

Most likely, the truth is that we humans are probably only aware of a small fraction of the powers of reality. Perhaps more open minds will allow us one day to realize that there really is a ‘force’, with a dark and light side, and who knows what else.

Eh? You're not serious, I hope.

One needn't be a believer to have interest or knowledge in a subject. Some people actually still believe the earth is flat. Does that make them right, because they believe? Has their belief somehow given them extra insights that the rest of us don't have?

The Ouija Board is just a variation of the "Talking Board", popular during the Spiritualist craze of the late 19th century. Seances. Ectoplasm. Rapping spirits. It's all nonsense.

Certainly all of what everyone has said is true. It can be used as a game. It can be used to play tricks on the gullible. Usually people push the pointer. All true.
But until you've actually experienced the evil that can reach into your heart from the pointer on the Ouija Board, you shouldn't knock those of us who give fair warning.

From a different viewpoint, ouija boards are viewed as evil by fundamentalist (and some other) Chrisitians because they are viewed as tools of the devil. Of course, most other religions are also viewed as tools of the devil by certain fundamentalist Christians.

I do believe in the spirit realm. I do not know about ouija boards, but I don't think that the spirit realm should be "toyed" with. I mean if practicing spiritism is your thing then fine. But it's not for me.

In general the store bought ouija boards that cost like ten bucks and are made of plastic are crap.
However, if you were to create one yourself. Say, carve it from wood and engrave all the letters with the specific intend of contacting the dead the entire time you were making it, you are all the more likely to contact spirits. It's because most people view them as toys that they don't work. People who truly believe and are prepared, will contact the dead.
I personally, have had some very strange things happen while using a ouija board and have heard of other such things happening as well.

Well I guess I'm a fundamentalist Christian...
I wasn't going to post in this forum because I didn't want to tread on anyone's toes who was seeking advice regarding earth religions - but since others have put their 2 cents in guess I will join the crowd.

If you follow God's teachings you are warned of evil spirits and of demons impersonating your dead loved ones. I believe that a Ouija board opens the portal for those evil spirts to come through. I believe the same of seances.

I've always been curious of Ouija boards. I always wanted to feel the planchette move under my finger-tips. But there are just some things this Christian isn't about to mess with.

Call me gullible if you want to. Call me naive if you want to. I like to think I am being intelligent by not messing with things I know nothing about! Big Grin

"Yes and no." - Elexina

This is one of the best answers on the entire site. (Yes, I am serious.) Those who don't get it should look at a Ouija board.

Parker Brother's sells a glow in the dark Ouija board game for about $25.00. Some have played the board with everyone blindfolded while someone watches to see where it really is going. It ends up all over the place and is jibberish. I personally think its all bunk.

Now I DO think Monopoly is an evil. Any game which takes 6 hours to play HAS to be evil. Wink
