Sorry Bab, wrong answer. However, it would be a big punishment to marry someone you love while taking a vow of celibacy at the same time. It is good that you are not the one who decides the punishment. Wink

By the way, I didnt know Angels could be tempted before I saw the romantic movie, "City of Angels". Also I didnt know that Angels had genders!

Insaf..off "the top of my head" so to speak, I think Corinthians says that she should then have her head shaved or her hair cut off if she refuses to cover her head.
This is just an interpretation of the book though, that some chuches enforce, is it not?

Yes, Paul said:

1 Corinthians 11

9: Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. 10: That is why a woman ought to have a veil on her head, because of the angels.

This was explained to me that in those times the angels were seen as messengers, and looked just like ordinary men. So angels could be tempted, just as people can be tempted.

You are right. And the reference is also right.
Source:
11:4 Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head.
11:5 But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven.
11:6 For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered.

I had mentioned "as per the bible" because different churches have their different interpretations.

I think that the punishment however doesnt hold much good today because of changing fashion. In earlier times long hair were considered somethings that beautifies and added grace to women and cutting them short was considered disgraceful.
Now a days, this doenst seem to be the case.

Hi Insaf, I knew the answer to this because one of my friends is a member of the Apostolic church.
I attended her church with her some years ago here in Canada, and the women were segregated from the men during the service, and all the women wore head coverings.

One of the rules of that church was that women should also keep their hair long.
My friend recently had her hair styled to just above shoulder length, and was strongly criticised by members of her church.
Their reasoning..that with short hair, she was no longer fit to worship at the feet of the Lord! So for them, at least, head coverings AND long hair seem to be the rule.

Hi Dance Girl,

That is interesting to hear.

I think that the focus is on women covering her head and it is clear that this act is supported directly from the bible. It is difficult to interpret the verse in any other way.

However, as this verse is not from the four canonical gospels (Mark, John, Luke & Matthews), its authencity is relativly doubtful. Also, this book was written by Paul, one of the most controversial person. Although I have to accept that Paul was quite influential and the form of Christianity that exist today is much based on the then new concepts and rationale provided by Paul and his likes.

Let's revisit this passage in its entirety. (Everyone go look it up to save bandwidth-1 Corinthians 11.) What was Paul trying to say here? The primary thing Paul is trying to do is to fix errors in the actions of the church. Here, I think there were women who were acting like men, usurping the man's authority, cutting their hair short, gossiping, despising the poor, getting drunk at fellowship meals. The indication is 'mind who you are worshipping, and come to God assembled with all reverence.' Paul is not adding a rule, because that would be legalism, and not really a solution to the problem at hand. Also, later in the chapter, he states that hair is a covering for the glory of God, so it would indicate that a hat or veil is not necessary.

When I was growing up and going to a Catholic school, we had to go to Mass on the first Friday of the month. If you didn't have your veil, you had to bobby-pin a tissue to the top of your head. This is extreme legalism and not what God intended.
