Peanuts are considered Legumes Wink Legumes are edible seeds enclosed in pods.

As for why I don't know. I would imagine it has something to do with those products swelling when cooked in water.

I'll let someone else answer. I'm only good for the initial question and sometimes a bonus round.

Humm,Yafa, I found a web site that contredicts what you mentioned about peanuts.

"Why do Ashkenazim not eat beans, rice, corn, or peas during Pesach?

The Rabbis forbade their use because in the past flour was made from them. They felt that people might become confused and be tempted to use regular flour made from those plants. Non flour products, such as peanut oil, may be used if prepared under Rabbinic supervision and properly certified. The Committee on Jewish Law and Standards has ruled unanimously that peanuts and peanut oil are permissible as peanuts are not actually legumes. Consult the Rabbis for guidance in the use of these products".

I guess you must have another reason and another source for your affirmation.

Motzart, my source is I guess my experience rowing up. You are right about the ashkenazi jew part. I forgot that Sephardi jews do not have this custom. Ashkenazi jews have the custom not to eat foods that may be mistaken as flour. I'm not sure all the details about it. As for peanuts, peanut oil is used. Peanuts in other forms though are not used.
