Trick question, Yafa! None; it is forbidden to touch a Torah scroll with one's fingers. Instead, a ceremonial object known as a yad is used to point to the words while reading from the Torah. The yad is usually made of silver, in the form of a hand with a pointed index finger. (Even us Irish Catholics know that!) Wink

no, this is not a trick question. There are times when a person reads the torah scroll and there is no yad avaliable. You are right about not touching the parchment. They use one finger from a certian hand over the letters to help them follow along. what finger is it?

Smile I can't find any text to support this answer. However, I believe that it is the right index finger that can, in certain circustances, be used to read the torah scroll.
Given that the yad is shaped like a small hand with the index finger pointing, that and this photo would seem to support this answer.

Nope. The correct answer is the middle finger of the right hand (even if the person is a lefty.) If you look in the picture that is in the post you showed me, the boy is touching the scroll with his hand (making it an incorrect photograph.). So, while the right middle finger is used, that finger still does not touch the scroll.

Dance girl, this was the type of question that searching the internet will show no results, while simply asking any rabbi will give you the result.....
