Who wears the Fishermans Ring? +++++++++++++++++ 07-02-03, 06:42 PM DorianGreyed The Pope. The ring symbolizes the first pope, and is used both as an outward display of the office, and as a signet marker to be pressed into wax to signify an official document from the pope. One of several things placed on the newly elected pope at the time of his election, the ring used today is not the original ring, if indeed there ever was one. The Ring of the Fisherman was first mentioned in the 13th Century.

07-02-03, 08:39 PM Sailracer DG, I don't recall where I read this, but perhaps you have a source for it. It is my understanding that when a Pope dies, his ring is destroyed, and a new one is made for the new Pontiff. I'm looking for a source for this protocol, too.
07-02-03, 08:50 PM DorianGreyed I think you are correct. I do know that all the rings are copies, but I seem to remember what you do, and it makes sense, in that the ring is a signet one, and then would not be exactly the same from one pope to another.
Of course, for JP II, they could have just added another " I " to it. It is not like the ring had much wear.
