Who and why has the custom to write a certian person's name in marker on the bottom of thier shoe? (hint, they stamp thier feet as they wear the shoe.)
Following the custom of wiping out the name of Amalek, Haman's ancestor, people make huge amounts of noise whenever Haman's name is mentioned during the reading of the Megillah. Originally this was done with horns and percussion instruments. In the 1400s someone created a special noisemaker called a gragger, and it is now used in most communities to wipe out Haman's name. In France in the 1600s, Jews used to write Haman's name on the bottom of their shoes and literally wipe out his name by shuffling their feet.
