My guess is All Saints' Day, November 1, 1492. This would mean that Columbus was in charge. I doubt that it was Christmas; Christmas was not celebrated as a holiday by most people at that time.

Good guess DG. Not All Saint's day and not Christmas, and not C.C. looking for a Christian Priest. Hint 1494.

Then I'm going with Advent, but I have no idea who the priest was. Columbus went back to Spain before Epiphany.

I have no idea. Columbus was in the New World for almost all of 1494, and named so many islands after saints that the first holiday could be almost any one of those saints' days.

Leave this open for someone else to answer.

Good question, by the way.

According to this site, it does look like it was the a mass celebrating the Epiphany.

The feast of Epiphany that fell on this day, January 6, 1494, was highly significant. On it Columbus and all his men disembarked and entered the temporary church that they had built. There they heard Fray Buil offer mass--the first mass ever heard on land in the New World, precursor of countless millions more.

KG, my second post was written before I saw Mozart's hint about 1494. When I said that COlumbus left before Epiphany, I meant on his first voyage. He actually left about the 3rd of January, 1493, before Epiphany, on the 6th. Other than when Columbus was in the New World, and the dates of the holidays, everything I said was a guess. I just thought it unlikely that they celebrated Christmas.

Oh, Dorian, you won this one; you were the first to mention the Epiphany. Wink
And like DG said, good question, Mozart!

That was before I saw the year. Once I saw that, I knew I didn't have a clue.
