donadiana, that is not the incedent I'm refering to. It is mentioned in the bible, but I guess I'm looking for a specific name of what the practice is called today.

Clare, most of the time is is done after circumsition, but if there is a baby that is sick, etc., it may be done before the circumsition, before the baby even has a name.

I think the name you are looking for leppi is Pidyon HaBen and yes as jr says, it takes place after the birth of a first born son.
