Since 2003, Major League Baseball has awarded home-field advantage in the World Series to the team representing the league which won the All-Star Game that year, to help raise interest in the All-Star Game after a tie in 2002. (Prior to 2003, home-field advantage alternated each year between the National League and the American League.) The first 2 games of the Series are played at the All-Star Game winner's home field, with the next 3 scheduled at the other league's home field. Games 6 and 7, if necessary, are back at the All Star Game winners field. This is often called the "2-3-2" format.
The NBA bases home-court advantage solely on which team has the best record, using various tiebreakers to settle the question should the teams finish with identical records. The NBA uses the 2-3-2 format just as MLB.
In the Stanley Cup Final, home ice is determined based on regular season points. The series follows a 2–2–1–1–1 format. This means that the home team will have Games 1 and 2, plus 5 and 7 if necessary, played on their home ice, while the other team will be at home for the games 3, 4, and (if necessary) 6.

thanks...I wondered because it seems when at home you tend to win more often....and it seems unfair to the team who has three games at home nstead of four....Red Wings play Wed in Pittsburg but since 7 (if necessary) will be here we are more likely to win it.
You have to realize that in order to have a winner in a series, it has to be a "best of" an odd number of games. Unless a team wins the series 4 games to none (4-0) or 4-2, there are going to be an odd number of games, which means one team gets to be the home team more than the other. The only alternative would be to play in a neutral location, which would really PO the fans. In the World Series, while the All Star Game winner potentially has the advantage IF the game goes to 6 or 7 games, it also has the disadvantage of possibly seeing the Series end at the other team's home field after 4 or 5 games.
