In the game of cricket You Hear the Shout go up HOWZAT?? when a decision is needed by the Umpire about a possible "OUT" and Sometimes its referred to the 3rd Television Umpire at some First class and International Test matches

My question is How do the Players appeal in a Baseball match to the Umpire (without intimidating them) and Is there a TV umpire available for a disputed Shout?

Bed, the whole idea is to intimidate the referee, in just about any US sport, in order to get a favorable call the next time. Whether it be a strike in baseball, a penalty in hockey, a foul in basketball, a holding call in football (or interference), and an in call in tennis.

Sounds familiar, jr Big Grin Tennis has a code now, intended to stop McEnroe style complaints and rants.Apart from laws against abuse and abusive behaviour (e.g throwing a racquet) the players are only allowed to question a limited number of calls.

Soccer needs one. It's depressing (and my team, Chelsea are notorious for it Frown) but every time a referee gives a decision against a team, which the team dislikes, he is instantly surrounded by players arguing against him.Referees are powerless unless they are threatened. This intimidating behaviour is so widespread at the top level that the governing body is proposing that only one player, the team captain, may approach the referee. It's strange that this problem has not been addressed before, considering how strict the rules are on other matters. A player is 'yellow carded' , officially cautioned by the ref. , if he does so much as take his shirt off in celebrating a goal or throws the ball away in anger or disgust ( a second 'yellow card' offence means he is 'red carded', sent off the field for the rest of the match)

That intimidation doesn't happen on the field in cricket . What Bedstor is asking about can't (presumably) happen in baseball.Under the laws of cricket,an umpire cannot give a batsman out unless a player 'appeals', that is asks him to make a ruling. He can't, of his own motion, declare a batsman out however obvious the case may appear. The traditional way is to yell what sounds like 'Owzat?' ['How was that?'].If the umpire is unsure, he asks for help from the 'third umpire' (there are two umpires on the field), who is sitting in the stands with the benefit of a TV replay which he can run in slow motion and stop before giving a ruling.

Rugby never had this problem. In rugby, the moment anyone questions a decision or shows dissent, the referee moves the play 10 metres towards the dissenter's goal line.Every repetition moves the play another 10 metres, so persisting may lose a team 20 or 30 metres or more of ground. If the decision was for a penalty kick at goal, that's making the kicker's task easier each time. What's more, the referee may send a player off the field for dissent or abuse.Result: the players get on with thumping, treading on and generally intimidating each other, not the ref !

Ah, Fred, but those where the good old days. Mac, Connors, Nastasse. When tennis had characters. Now it's just grunts.
