I have a Hitachi model VT-UX6430A VCR. I use it several times a week, and especially to record NASCAR races for watching later in the day. Last week, then again yesterday, when I played a recording, the picture was fine but the sound was nothing but static/noise. I've tried recording this morning and get the same noise. I've used two different tapes and I've tried playback on two TVs, so that's not the problem.

If you think that is a nuisance imagine what it would be like to record a show but pick up the sound from the show you recorded over! That's what happened to me awhile ago.
It sounds like your vcr heads that play back the sound are out of alignment. But have you tried playing a tape professionally recorded (like a movie from Blockbusters)? If a commercial tape will play then the problem is not with your playback but with the actual recording. You could try a head cleaner which is nothing more than a cassette with a small opening where you deposit a few drops of cleaning fluid and then place the cassette in the recorder and hit play/record at the same time. Fifteen years ago they were $10 and could be found most anywhere vcr tapes were sold. That might help but chances are you need a new vcr. The one you mentioned is an older model, not even made anymore, so chances are you need to replace it or spend a small fortune repairing it.
