Honest, I don't know where else to post this.

I bought an older VCR off ebay and when it arrived I discovered it would not support my satellite program. My question is: can I still record and/or play tapes on it?

Thanks for any help. Wink

Agreed Catty we have no suitable section to deal with these Frown

As regards recording off satellite you'll need a Scart lead to get any joy out of it
Off TV the default setting is channel 36 to view on the TV give or take a channel
Been like that since they were invented Smile
Has it got an install or Auto tune button on the player or remote
If somebody has the Instructions on how to set the Auto tune into action in 2 minutes thats a job well done
Only 1 item missing what is the Make and Model Catty? look at the back of the VCR on the makers plate for this Info
Or... An even better idea if you still have the Ebay item number can you post the link here
Thanks Wink
As for playing your VHS tapes Theres no worries on that score unless the Video heads are on their last legs . Typical symptoms: fuzzy picture, poor sound quality.Wink I've had several players like that..Best brands this side of the Pond at a reasonable price are Toshiba and Grundig
Current player is a Toshiba Still going strong about 10 years ago(brought new) and run every day

Catty, the most suitable forum for your question is Engineering and Technology. I'll relocate this thread.

Bedstor - Unfortunately, TVs aren't the same over here - we don't have scart sockets over here and we don't use channel 36 for line inputs, our default is channel 3.

Catty - most likely. Are you trying to record over the airwaves or from your satellite?

Rather than listing all possible connections, I think it's better for me to ask what types of connections you have.

Which of your devices have connections like these? On the VCR, are there two sets of 3 (on labeled in and the other labeled out)?

Which devices have this connection?

This connection?

This connection?
(assuming I'm remembering correctly that you live in the US, I would very much doubt any of them have it)

Methos
Those sockets are all on the European models
The early models where dependant on the 3 jack plug method to link together vis : Video and 2 audio plugs ... but when the Scart sockets/leads came out it was the video equivalent of the USB hub/cables on your computer ... Cool

Just thought on My Playstation 2 connects to the TV via a 3 lead phono to a Scart adaptor thogh it has a non standard A/V multi socket at the console end(only 1 plug goes here) Frown
and no other option like a TV (R/F out) plug Mad

In hindsight, it means therefore North America is really lagging behind the rest of the world in TV Technology Frown
Scart sockets came out in the late 70's/1980's

It really doesn't make a difference when they came out or who has the more modern equipment, does it? What matters is what Catty has.

Sorry all, to be so late with this, but I haven't got notifications from AP for a long time. It's a Sony Model SLVN 750.

On the left front are three connections. Atop the first it says "video." Over the other two it says "L audio R," which I assume means left and right. Beneath those three it says "Line 2 in."

On the back are two vertical rows of three connections. Atop the first row it says "Line out," and below the first horizontal row it says "audio" and beneath the second "video." To the right of that are two screw-in pin connections (what do they call those things?), "in from antenna," and "out to TV."

I hope that helps.

just pulled this off the webits Sony catalogue in an Acrobat (PDF)file and it has a picture plus details of your machine Cool

Which clarifies an awful lot of things Smile
I think you'll be able to get away with linking your Vcr to your Sat reciever via this route Copy this order "TV out" or "RF out"? on your sat reciever to the "in from antenna" socket? and the "out to tv to the TV
or.... you'll have to buy an AV phono cable set from a Tv shop (they are cheap) 3 cables with red /black & yellow or white plugs just locate the corresponding sockets on both the VCR and Sat reciever and plug the red to re black to black and the other cable to he white or yellow socket.Doesn't matter if its to the front nor the rear set of sockets Whatevers easiest for you to see what happening Wink
