Can I hook 2 VCR's together and dub my own tapes? I want to make some copies and edit the commercials out...or at least make some copies.

Yes, you can. I'm not sure exactly how it's done since i only ever tried it once. I do know that it will not work with certain tapes. But if you are you are using tapes that you recorded it should work fine. Just don't try to tape something off a rented movie, because it will not work. Trust me.

Thanks kalena! Meanwhile I met piggins in chat and her husband gave this advise to pass to me. He had to run off to work before I was done asking questions.

Hook video Output from recorder #1 to video Input of #2. Audio Output of #1 to audio Input of #2. Hook recorder #2 to the TV. Use RCA jacks.

One of my recorders is a combo tv/vcr. This one should be recorder #2, right?

nqd ~

The highest quality vcr should be the recorder. Both will probably play the tape at highest quality, but the recording machine has the challenge of trying to recreate that quality. The exception to this is when the hookup doesn't allow you to see what is being recorded ~ if that's important to you.
Then using the combo tv/vcr does tend to guarantee you can view the tape while it's being recorded, so that might be the safe way.

If what you are copying is very important ~ personal tapes of celebrations or the like ~ you might want to consider recording in 2 hour mode. VHS tapes have very low resolution and the drop off in copies is high compared to other methods. If you have multiple copies to make, use the original for each or the final result may be too blurred to enjoy. It's been a long time since I've had to worry about it, but think VHS tapes are in the range of 360 lines of resolution. Six hour mode may suffice, but does tend to have lower quality.
In case your machine has the 4 hour mode (three settings on speed) ~ don't use it. Too many machines today don't recognize that speed and will not play the tape.

You can also purchase cables made just for that purpose ~ including a better pass through cable for the video and twin audio cables, with RCA jacks. Most any store that carries electronics should have them.

Thanks Prothero! You answered questions I didnt know I had. I guess I got lucky as I have some 8 hour Maxell tapes but recorded the tv show in 2 hour SP mode so I should get the best copy if I follow your instructions.
