Obviously, Anti-Virus protection is essential. Add to that, you really should be using a "firewall" to protect yourself from hackers online.
Norton makes a "uninstaller" program that you can use if necessary to uninstall the product. When it is successfully uninstalled, you should be able to reinstall it and get it working correctly.

A good free firewall is available free of charge to non-commercial home users from Zone Labs. I suggest you get the Norton AntiVirus problem fixed first, but then download and install the free ZoneAlarm firewall at:
